What changes to expect from the new Prime Minister?

Given the results of the municipal elections, and by virtue of Decree of the 31st of March 2014[1], the President of the French Republic appointed as Prime Minister Mr Manuel Valls, who was previously the Minister of the Interior.

In April 2013, during a debate without a vote on student and professional immigration at the Senate, Manuel Valls was willing to introduce a law for « generalization of multi-years resident permits, improvement of welcoming conditions in Prefectures so that resources can be focused on controls, harmonization of the different resident permits and strengthening of the fight against illegal immigration»[2].

More recently, with circular of the 3rd of January 2014[3], he encouraged Prefects to improve welcoming services for foreigners in Prefectures.

It can therefore be assumed those guidelines will be maintained although the priorities of the new Minister of Interior Bernard Cazeneuve (former Minister for the Budget) are not yet known.
